James Bond’s Washroom Claims Toilet Tourism Award
By Justine Tyerman

A male voice greets me in the ladies’ bathrooms in the Piz Gloria restaurant at the summit of Mount Schilthorn, Switzerland: “Tonight, my place – just the two of us.”

I swivel round to find myself in the company of none other than James Bond, Mister 007 himself.

The chaps are in for a surprise in the men’s rooms, too: Diana Rigg appears while they are washing their hands. No wonder the loos are so popular!

So what’s James and company doing in the bathrooms at the top of a Swiss mountain?

Mount Schilthorn was used as a location in the 1969 movie, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and it just happens to be the 50th anniversary of the movie in 2019. Hence the extravagant loo make-over and other fascinating Bond-themed attractions like Bond World 007 and the 007 Walk of Fame.

Once you drag yourself away from the ingenious bathrooms, the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant has spectacular views of the famous Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains, along with more than 200 other peaks. And if you’re after an adrenalin rush, do the vertiginous Skyline Walk and Thrill Walk at Birg Station on the way up the aerial cableway.

Meanwhile, my kilted friend Alan Ramsey – star of this video – takes us on a tour of the 007-themed restrooms, which were recently named the supreme winners of the 2018 International Toilet Tourism Awards, fighting off contenders from all around the world.

And yes, he’s a genuine Scotsman…
