The Silver Ghost – The Original ‘Best Car in the World’
By TMA Howe
For over 100 years, Rolls-Royce has been renowned for producing the best luxury cars in the world. In 1907, the British manufacturer painted its new 40/50hp model silver and set off on a 15,000 mile trip to prove the car’s reliability. The car had a plaque screwed to it announcing the name, ‘The Silver Ghost’.
Although Rolls-Royce is today unable to use the Silver Ghost name (ironically, it’s owned by Bentley!), they have now created a limited edition of the Ghost. Just 35 bespoke Ghosts, the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Collection will be made and will reiterate Rolls-Royce as manufacturer of ‘The Best Car in the World’.
The Spirit of Ecstasy is the muse that has held the place of honour on the front of Rolls-Royces since 1911. To emphasise how special the ‘Silver Ghost Collection’ is, the muse is made from solid sterling-silver, and marked on the base of each is a special AX201 hallmark – the registration number of the original Silver Ghost. Other visual clues from the original Silver Ghost which make this one very special motor car include:
- Black grill vanes
- Engraved chrome wheel surround
- A coach line with pure silver particles
“Careful consideration has been paid to the Collection’s defining features,” says Matthew Butt, Product Manager, Ghost, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “References extoling the past are skilfully hand-crafted into Ghost’s interior and exterior, creating a contemporary homage which speaks as much of today’s great brand as the original Silver Ghost does of its day. This is a truly remarkable collection.”
Rolls-Royce have just released this special film showing this elegant contemporary iteration of the Ghost in motion… enjoy!
